A Dawn Awakening and the Embrace of Warmth
The clock read 5:15 AM, and a sense of urgency propelled me forward. I was hurrying to meet the border students, who were about to embark on a morning walk – a vital component of our well-being program, designed to infuse momentum into the start of Term 2. My arrival, however, was fifteen minutes late, causing me to miss the initial warm-up session.
As I approached the assembly court, the boys were already streaming out, their path leading them towards Rashigang and back. Moments later, the girls followed, their route winding along a charming footpath, past vibrant flower gardens, before merging onto the highway. They headed west, destined for Tshomji village and their return journey. After capturing their initial, energetic strides, I turned eastward to join the boys.
It was a truly tranquil and beautiful morning. The crisp air hummed with the quiet energy of the children on their walk, punctuated by the rhythmic footfalls of a couple of ladies from the Bitekha community, already deep into their regular morning jog. A delightful sight unfolded as a flock of pigeons descended, eagerly accepting their morning breakfast, generously scattered by a nearby household.
Beyond the undeniable physical benefits, walking offers a profound engagement with our surroundings. Unlike the fleeting glimpses from a car, where everything passes in a blur, a walk allows us to truly savor the pleasing sights and sounds. The melodious chirping of early birds provided a soothing soundtrack as we moved, and charming villages unfolded slowly before our eyes. What often appears as indistinct scenery from a car becomes remarkably clear and detailed on foot; every nuance, both above and below the road, is thoroughly absorbed. Moreover, walking in a larger group fosters genuine interaction. Our children, for instance, chatted animatedly, their conversations making the journey seem effortless, strengthening their bonds with every shared step and laugh.
Soothing Waters and Family Bonds: The Jabana Hot Stone Bath
Following our invigorating morning walk, my family and I set our sights on Changthangkha for a much-anticipated hot stone bath. My uncle, Ashang, was particularly eager for this experience, specifically at Jabana Hot Stone Bath, a place revered in the community for its therapeutic properties. We had secured one of their tubs for the day, a reservation costing Nu 1500.
We arrived around 11:00 AM. The sun was high, painting the day with a clear, bright light. The bath's location was idyllic, nestled just a few meters in front of the host's welcoming home, boasting three tubs in total. The moment we stepped onto the premises, our host greeted us warmly and immediately began the preparations. It was fascinating to observe their ingenious method: stones were creatively heated alongside a drum of boiling water. This efficient system ensured that as the stones reached the perfect temperature for the bath, the water in the drum also heated up, ready to be channeled into the tub rooms for our final rinse. Before their immersion, the fiery stones were briefly plunged into a bowl of water, a clever step to cleanse them of any impurities. While the preparations were underway, my children comfortably rested in a designated area.
Soon, Ashang, despite his doctors' reservations, eased himself into the long-awaited warmth of the hot stone bath. For him, these baths were more than just a treatment; they were a cherished ritual, a refreshing respite he'd often sought during his time in dzongs and monasteries. I soon joined him, with the rest of the family planning to follow. This was a unique opportunity for us to experience a hot stone bath in a place so highly regarded within the community. Our host proudly shared that people traveled from as far as Samtse, drawn by the promise of its therapeutic benefits.
Beyond its reported healing properties, the bath offered a sanctuary for rejuvenation, relaxation, and quiet contemplation. It also served as a perfect setting for a family gathering, fostering connection in a serene environment. We were immensely grateful to our uncle Sangay for generously sponsoring the tub fee; he eventually joined us after his archery match. As we commenced our journey home, a gentle drizzle began to fall, a refreshing end to the day. We extended our heartfelt thanks to Jaba Lam for guiding us safely back to our station. The children concluded their day with a lively evening of fried rice and television, while Ashang, fully content and revitalized, enjoyed a well-deserved rest. Truly, the day had unfolded as a resounding success.
Concluding Reflections
This day, a harmonious blend of invigorating activity and profound relaxation, served as a powerful reminder of life's simple yet profound pleasures. From the shared camaraderie of a morning walk amidst nature's beauty to the soothing embrace of a traditional hot stone bath, each moment reinforced the importance of holistic well-being. It underscored how slowing down, connecting with our surroundings, and nurturing our relationships can enrich our lives immeasurably. Such experiences, often overlooked in our fast-paced world, are the threads that weave a tapestry of lasting memories, reminding us to appreciate the present and cherish the bonds that truly matter.
