🌅 A Day of Bhutanese Bliss: Morning Walks & Hot Stone Baths! 🛀

A Dawn Awakening and the Embrace of Warmth

The clock read 5:15 AM, and a sense of urgency propelled me forward. I was hurrying to meet the border students, who were about to embark on a morning walk – a vital component of our well-being program, designed to infuse momentum into the start of Term 2. My arrival, however, was fifteen minutes late, causing me to miss the initial warm-up session.

As I approached the assembly court, the boys were already streaming out, their path leading them towards Rashigang and back. Moments later, the girls followed, their route winding along a charming footpath, past vibrant flower gardens, before merging onto the highway. They headed west, destined for Tshomji village and their return journey. After capturing their initial, energetic strides, I turned eastward to join the boys.

It was a truly tranquil and beautiful morning. The crisp air hummed with the quiet energy of the children on their walk, punctuated by the rhythmic footfalls of a couple of ladies from the Bitekha community, already deep into their regular morning jog. A delightful sight unfolded as a flock of pigeons descended, eagerly accepting their morning breakfast, generously scattered by a nearby household.

Beyond the undeniable physical benefits, walking offers a profound engagement with our surroundings. Unlike the fleeting glimpses from a car, where everything passes in a blur, a walk allows us to truly savor the pleasing sights and sounds. The melodious chirping of early birds provided a soothing soundtrack as we moved, and charming villages unfolded slowly before our eyes. What often appears as indistinct scenery from a car becomes remarkably clear and detailed on foot; every nuance, both above and below the road, is thoroughly absorbed. Moreover, walking in a larger group fosters genuine interaction. Our children, for instance, chatted animatedly, their conversations making the journey seem effortless, strengthening their bonds with every shared step and laugh.

Soothing Waters and Family Bonds: The Jabana Hot Stone Bath

Following our invigorating morning walk, my family and I set our sights on Changthangkha for a much-anticipated hot stone bath. My uncle, Ashang, was particularly eager for this experience, specifically at Jabana Hot Stone Bath, a place revered in the community for its therapeutic properties. We had secured one of their tubs for the day, a reservation costing Nu 1500.

We arrived around 11:00 AM. The sun was high, painting the day with a clear, bright light. The bath's location was idyllic, nestled just a few meters in front of the host's welcoming home, boasting three tubs in total. The moment we stepped onto the premises, our host greeted us warmly and immediately began the preparations. It was fascinating to observe their ingenious method: stones were creatively heated alongside a drum of boiling water. This efficient system ensured that as the stones reached the perfect temperature for the bath, the water in the drum also heated up, ready to be channeled into the tub rooms for our final rinse. Before their immersion, the fiery stones were briefly plunged into a bowl of water, a clever step to cleanse them of any impurities. While the preparations were underway, my children comfortably rested in a designated area.

Soon, Ashang, despite his doctors' reservations, eased himself into the long-awaited warmth of the hot stone bath. For him, these baths were more than just a treatment; they were a cherished ritual, a refreshing respite he'd often sought during his time in dzongs and monasteries. I soon joined him, with the rest of the family planning to follow. This was a unique opportunity for us to experience a hot stone bath in a place so highly regarded within the community. Our host proudly shared that people traveled from as far as Samtse, drawn by the promise of its therapeutic benefits.

Beyond its reported healing properties, the bath offered a sanctuary for rejuvenation, relaxation, and quiet contemplation. It also served as a perfect setting for a family gathering, fostering connection in a serene environment. We were immensely grateful to our uncle Sangay for generously sponsoring the tub fee; he eventually joined us after his archery match. As we commenced our journey home, a gentle drizzle began to fall, a refreshing end to the day. We extended our heartfelt thanks to Jaba Lam for guiding us safely back to our station. The children concluded their day with a lively evening of fried rice and television, while Ashang, fully content and revitalized, enjoyed a well-deserved rest. Truly, the day had unfolded as a resounding success.

Concluding Reflections

This day, a harmonious blend of invigorating activity and profound relaxation, served as a powerful reminder of life's simple yet profound pleasures. From the shared camaraderie of a morning walk amidst nature's beauty to the soothing embrace of a traditional hot stone bath, each moment reinforced the importance of holistic well-being. It underscored how slowing down, connecting with our surroundings, and nurturing our relationships can enrich our lives immeasurably. Such experiences, often overlooked in our fast-paced world, are the threads that weave a tapestry of lasting memories, reminding us to appreciate the present and cherish the bonds that truly matter.

A Day of Grace and Devotion: Celebrating Guru Rinpoche's Birthday at Serlung Pelkar Choling Goenpa

A Day of Grace and Devotion: Celebrating Guru Rinpoche's Birthday at Serlung Pelkar Choling Goenpa

Our journey to the Serlung Pelkar Choling Goenpa was more than just a trip; it was a deeply spiritual pilgrimage to a place steeped in devotion and tradition. On the auspicious occasion of Guru Rinpoche's birth anniversary, our family joined countless others to immerse ourselves in a day of blessings, cultural richness, and profound reflection.

We began our day bright and early, around 8:30 AM, with packed lunches in hand – just in case our meal times didn't align with the institute's schedule. The day dawned beautifully, assuaging our fears of rain and promising clear skies for our excursion. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by monks who kindly offered us breakfast. Having already eaten a decent meal before setting out, we proceeded directly to the day's program.

Outside the main structure, dancers entertained the crowds who had come for blessings, their vibrant movements a testament to Bhutanese culture. Inside, His Eminence Trulku Thinley presided over prayers dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, his presence radiating peace. The institute teemed with local people seeking blessings, and attendees had the flexibility to move between the spiritual programs and the lively entertainment outside. Tea, snacks, and juices were generously served throughout the day, ensuring everyone was comfortable. The presence of the Honorable Dzongda of Paro and his team from the Dzongkhag administration further graced the event. Lunch was served sumptuously and in abundance, a true feast for all.

In the recess of the day's main program, the monks showcased their impressive debating skills – a fascinating glimpse into their rigorous spiritual training.

As the monks prepared the hall for the blessing program, we stepped outside and caught glimpses of the vibrant entertainment. It was truly a perfect break for the local people, offering a welcome respite from their tiring days of vegetable harvesting and cultivating. Even during our lunch break, the dancers continued to entertain us, adding to the day's charm. It was truly a wonderful experience to receive such profound blessings, be enthralled by the serene environment, and enjoy the continuous cultural performances.

In a matter of minutes, it was time to receive blessings from His Eminence Trulku Thinley Rinpoche. He bestowed upon us the powerful Tacha-chung-sum wang, a rare and auspicious empowerment. This blessing connects us with Tamdrin, the emanation of Chenrezig (Buddha of Compassion); Chagna Dorji (Vajrapani), embodying power for enlightenment; and Ja Chung (Garuda), a mystical protector removing obstacles in Vajrayana Buddhism. To receive such an empowerment on Guru Rinpoche's birthday from a high lama like Trulku Thinley Rinpoche, especially in a blessed place, was an exceptionally rare opportunity.

Even after conferring the blessings from his throne, His Eminence still made the effort to descend and personally touch our heads, a gesture that profoundly assured us of having received the blessings. It’s often said that many devotees aren't truly satisfied unless a great lama bestows the blessings directly upon their heads; this personal touch signifies genuine receipt.

The institute itself boasts a truly ambient setting. Classrooms and clean hostels for monks surround the main assembly hall. On the second floor of the main hall, a library offers a quiet retreat. Resting places for guests of all kinds were thoughtfully designed for comfort. From one side of the institute, we enjoyed breathtaking views of Damchu, Paga, Rinchenling, and Shemaganglkha in Chukha Dzongkhag.

Fully satisfied with our visit, we then departed for Dobji Dzong, the revered seat of the great yogi Milarepa.

In the evening, after our incredibly satisfying day, we all gathered at Lop Sonam's residence for some well-deserved relaxation. We unwound over hot teas, cakes, and snacks, reflecting on the day's profound blessings. Since lunch had been so generously served at Serlung, we ended up enjoying our packed lunches for dinner before heading home, perfectly content.

Our spiritual journey on the birth anniversary of Guru Rinpoche was truly a profound and unforgettable experience. From receiving the powerful blessings of His Eminence Trulku Thinley Rinpoche and the rare Tacha-chung-sum wang, to soaking in the serene ambiance of the Serlung Pelkar Choling Goenpa, every moment resonated deeply. The blend of spiritual devotion, vibrant cultural displays, and the precious opportunity to share this as a family made it an especially memorable day. It was a day filled with grace, reflection, and a deep sense of connection to our rich spiritual heritage.

That Scenic Race: A Journey Through Villages & Woods!

Beyond the Finish Line: My Epic Cross-Country Adventure Through Bhutan's Heart

There are races, and then there are journeys. My recent cross-country adventure through the breathtaking landscapes of Bhutan was unequivocally the latter. This wasn't just about conquering a distance; it was an immersion into a unique culture, a physical test against diverse terrain, and a heartwarming run alongside the most inspiring young athletes I've ever met.

From the moment I signed up, I knew this wouldn't be a typical race. The promise of a course that wound its way from paved roads to rugged dirt tracks, and even ancient, whispering trails, through scenic villages, and over formidable mountains, was enough to pique my interest. But the reality? It surpassed every expectation.

The Dawn of an Adventure

Race morning dawned crisp and clear, the mountain air carrying a hint of dew. After a quick breakfast and a final gear check – shoes laced tight, hydration pack filled, GoPro ready – I made my way to the start line. The atmosphere buzzed with a mix of nervous energy and eager anticipation. Runners stretched, chatted, and absorbed the final instructions from the race director.

But what truly made the start line electrifying was the sight of the local school children. Dressed in their vibrant uniforms, their faces alight with excitement and determination, they were ready to run alongside us. Their youthful energy was infectious, setting a truly special tone for the day.

A Race Through Changing Worlds

And then, we were off! The initial stretch on the paved road was a deceptive calm. My strides were rhythmic, my pace steady, and I settled into a comfortable rhythm. It was perfect for warming up, but I knew this ease wouldn't last.

Soon enough, the tarmac ended, and we transitioned onto the unpaved roads. Dust began to kick up with every stride, and I had to adjust my footing, navigating the looser gravel and compacted earth. The landscape, however, was already starting to open up, hinting at the grandeur to come.

This is where the magic truly began. We plunged onto ancient trails, narrow and winding, their moss-covered stones whispering tales of centuries past. Running on these historic paths, I felt a profound connection to the land and its heritage.

Then, we arrived in the first of several charming villages. It was like stepping into a postcard. Traditional wooden houses, adorned with intricate carvings and splashes of vibrant color, lined the path. Spring flowers, in brilliant hues of crimson, gold, and purple, spilled out from every garden, painting the scene with an incredible freshness after the winter's dryness. Villagers, young and old, lined the route, offering warm smiles and shouts of encouragement. Waving back, high-fiving the enthusiastic children along the sidelines, reinforced the feeling that this was more than just a race – it was a shared community event.

The Battle Against Gravity: Uphills and Downhills

No cross-country race in the mountains is complete without its challenges, and this one delivered in spades. The uphillswere brutal. My legs screamed with every deliberate, agonizing lift, feeling like they were suddenly filled with lead. Each breath became a conscious, desperate act as my heart hammered against my ribs, demanding more and more oxygen from the thinning air.

The ground offered a cruel mix, and my gaze narrowed to the inches in front of my shoes, searching for the path of least resistance. The internal monologue was a constant battle: "Just keep moving, no matter your pace," versus the insidious whisper of "Just walk." Yet, topping each summit was its own reward – the panoramic views that unfurled before me were absolutely breathtaking, a powerful antidote to the physical torment.

And then came the downhills. A chance to gain speed, to feel the exhilarating rush of gravity assisting rather than resisting. But they demanded focus – careful foot placement was key on the loose terrain to avoid a tumble.

Finally, a straight road offered a momentary reprieve. After all the climbing and twisting, it was almost a relief, yet also a mental game. It was a grind, a test of pure perseverance, telling myself: "Forward progress is all that matters."

The Heartbeat of the Race: The School Children

While the scenery and terrain were spectacular, the undeniable highlight of this race was the participation of the local school children. Their energy was truly infectious. With bright smiles and incredible determination, they ran alongside adults, sometimes even outpacing them, their laughter echoing along the trails. They weren't just participating; they were embracing the joy of movement, fostering a love for activity that was truly inspiring. Seeing their camaraderie and unyielding spirit was a powerful reminder of the simple beauty of effort and community.

Crossing the Finish Line

The final stretch was a blur of burning quads and lungs, fueled by the sight of the finish line arch. Each step was hard-won, but the cheers of the crowd grew louder, pushing me forward. Crossing that line, exhausted but exhilarated, was a feeling of profound accomplishment. High-fives were exchanged, medals were draped, and shared stories of the race's challenges and triumphs filled the air.

Cooling down, hydrating, and reflecting, it became clear: this was one of the most unique and challenging cross-country races I’ve ever experienced. The blend of diverse terrain, the spiritual resonance of the ancient trails, the warmth of the villages, and especially the infectious spirit of the Bhutanese children, made it an adventure that will stay with me long after the soreness fades.

If you ever get the chance to participate in a race that takes you through such diverse landscapes and immerses you in local communities, I cannot recommend it enough. It's more than just a run; it’s an unforgettable journey for the body, mind, and spirit.

Football Moments, Some Evenings at Woochu Sports A

Our Unforgettable Football Journey: More Than Just a Game

This past May and June, my colleagues and I embarked on a football journey that, despite my own modest skills, became truly unforgettable. A tournament organized by teachers in Woochu, open only to staff, presented an opportunity we couldn't resist. For us, this wasn't merely about winning; it was about much more profound goals.

More Than the Game

Our primary motivations for joining were to inject adventure and relaxation into our busy schedules, strengthen our bonds as colleagues, and boost our physical and mental well-being through active participation and practice. Most importantly, we wanted to create a lasting memory with Lopen Nima Tharchen, a beloved and incredibly sporty colleague who will be leaving us in August. This tournament was a special chance to share one last sporting moment with him.

Lopen Gyembo spearheaded our efforts, forming the team and leading the fundraising. All of us sports enthusiasts eagerly stepped forward. Our former colleagues in Australia always generously contribute, which really helps us out financially. Thanks to Lopen Gyembo and some generous friends, we raised a substantial Nu 20,000, covering our entry fee.

Dedication and Discovery

Most evenings, we gathered on the school playground, training and practicing as best we could. These sessions offered a refreshing break from our demanding days, providing significant physical and mental benefits. While I've never been particularly athletic and often avoided sports during my schooling, I genuinely enjoy games. Watching sports on TV and social media is a favorite pastime. Participating in this tournament, even with my "childish" skills, ensured I was physically active instead of simply sitting in the staffroom or at home.

We were fortunate that most matches were scheduled for weekends, which helped us balance our commitment to the tournament with our teaching duties. Weekday matches would have been tough; finishing games around 9 PM often meant not getting back until late, making the next teaching day a challenge. We were very grateful to the coordinators for the weekend scheduling.

The Woochu Arena Experience

Winding through breathtaking highways and picturesque villages, we finally arrived at our destination. The Woochu Sports Arena, home to Paro FC, is about an hour and a half away. We carpooled, usually in at least three cars. It was heartwarming to see our female colleagues and families often join us, cheering us on and sponsoring refreshments. Even male colleagues who weren't playing supported us in the same way. We made sure to arrive about an hour before each game to recover from the journey, rest, and warm up—a key consideration for teams traveling from afar, not to mention the associated travel risk.

Each time we entered the stadium, we stepped into a world buzzing with energy. We passed through the arena's gym, the vibrant futsal grounds, and bustling cafeterias. Above us, prayer flags fluttered in the breeze, while lush gardens, neatly 'tuffed' green spaces, and posters of Paro FC players and ads welcomed us. For every game, we felt like starsentering the stadium, ready for a major showdown. As soon as we arrived, we settled in, observing the Paro FC training session unfold on the pitch. Through our casual chats and focused gaze, we even picked up a few skills from their impressive drills.

Under the Lights: A Special Feeling

The sun dipped below the mountains, painting the sky in fiery hues, but the real magic began when the stadium lights flickered to life. A collective cheer went up as the bright white glow bathed the pitch, transforming the familiar green into a vibrant emerald carpet. The air, still warm from the day, now held a different kind of energy—crisp, electric, and alive with anticipation.

The shadows stretched long and dramatic, adding an intensity to every sprint and tackle. The roar of the small crowd echoed differently under the vast open sky, amplified and exhilarating. The ball, a blur in daylight, now seemed to almost glow as it zipped across the turf, illuminated by the powerful beams. Every pass felt sharper, every shot more powerful, and every save a heroic feat. Playing under those lights, with the cool evening air on our faces and the world narrowing down to just the pitch, was a feeling of pure, unadulterated joy. It wasn't just a game; it was an experience, a fleeting moment where we felt like professional athletes in our own grand arena.

The Sweet Taste of Success

With immense dedication, hard work, cooperation, and team spirit, we successfully booked our spot in the tournament final. Reaching this stage was a significant achievement in itself, a testament to the journey we had undertaken. We endured and sacrificed, braving long travels, especially the late-night drives through heavy downpours.

Our primary intentions for participating were fulfilled, our supporters' wishes answered, and the contributions from generous hearts certainly didn't go to waste. We achieved a great measure of success, and that brought us immense joy, even though we couldn't clinch the trophy in the final match. Just making it to the final brought a profound sense of satisfaction to all of us. The Royal Academy (TRA) staff ultimately lifted the rolling trophy, while we proudly took home a sum of Nu 30,000 as runners-up. Every drop of sweat, every ounce of pain, and every burst of energy felt completely worth it by the end of each game.

A Perfect End to Our Journey

The final match was truly heartwarming, not just for the game itself, but for the incredible support we received. Our female colleagues, along with the male colleagues who weren't playing, generously sponsored a celebratory dinner, a gesture that deeply moved all of us. Together, we enjoyed a wonderful evening at Jigsel Restaurant in the heart of Paro town, successfully wrapping up everything we had planned.

Our participation was more than worth it. Beyond the benefits to us players, it brought all our colleagues and their families closer, forging even stronger bonds – that's the true power of games. We were incredibly fortunate: no injuries, no travel mishaps, and no dramas on the field. Despite a few minor hitches, everything ran smoothly. A huge thank you to everyone for your prayers and unwavering support.

To truly celebrate our journey, we extended invitations to all our colleagues, their families, and our incredible supporters. It was a wonderful evening dedicated to reliving the shared joy and triumph of what we had collectively achieved. We reminisced about the tournament's highlights, basking in the glow of our success. Our heartfelt gratitude for the supporters' unwavering dedication was expressed, though words often felt inadequate. The hours flew by, filled with laughter, joyful chatter, and genuine camaraderie. A delicious array of food and drinks, sourced from the best the locality had to offer, completed the perfect celebration.

Until Next Time...

As the last of our colleagues and their families departed, the echoes of laughter still lingered in the air, a beautiful testament to an evening truly well spent. The football tournament may have concluded on the field, but its spirit of camaraderie and shared joy found its perfect extension in this celebration. It was more than just a party; it was a powerful reminder of how sports can unite us, creating bonds that extend far beyond the game itself. We wrapped up not just an event, but a season of memories, carrying forward the warmth and strengthened connections until our next adventure.

Lomba Celebrations in My Village

 https://youtu.be/sTHSfWN-oEs?si=611OIjJJ99n0pRJS

This video showcases how the people of Jashina Village under Naja Gewog in Paro celebrated Lomba, the Bhutanese New Year, in their own unique ways. The villagers participated in various festive activities, including visiting local temples to express gratitude for a successful year and offer prayers for continued peace and prosperity. They also engaged in sporting events and lively dances to welcome the New Year with happiness and enjoyment. Finally, the community came together to share delicious meals and refreshments, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.

Lomba is the joyous New Year celebrated in the Haa and Paro districts of Bhutan. This vibrant festival marks the successful passage of the previous year and the auspicious arrival of the new one. The very name "Lomba" is deeply rooted in its significance: "Lo" translates to "year," and "ba" means "carry." Thus, "Lomba" literally signifies "leaving behind the past year and carrying forward a new one."

Celebrated from the 29th day of the 10th month to the 2nd day of the 11th month in the Lunar Calendar, Lomba ushers in the beginning of a fresh cycle. It's a cherished time for families to reunite and communities to come together in festive merriment.

Like all Bhutanese festivals, Lomba is a time for lively celebrations. Archery and "khuru" (a traditional game) are popular pastimes. However, Lomba is uniquely distinguished by its culinary delights. In Haa, the festival is incomplete without "Hoentey," a special type of dumpling. Unlike traditional momos, Hoentey features a unique outer layer made from buckwheat instead of flour. The flavorful filling is a zesty blend of dried turnip leaves, chili, and fermented cheese. While Paro boasts its own rich culinary traditions for this occasion, both valleys share a common thread – the preparation of festive delicacies.

Beyond the festivities, Lomba is a time for spiritual reflection. People perform rituals to ward off evil spirits and invoke blessings for prosperity in the coming year. It's also an opportunity to express gratitude to the protective deities for a successful year.
