A Day of Grace and Devotion: Celebrating Guru Rinpoche's Birthday at Serlung Pelkar Choling Goenpa

A Day of Grace and Devotion: Celebrating Guru Rinpoche's Birthday at Serlung Pelkar Choling Goenpa

Our journey to the Serlung Pelkar Choling Goenpa was more than just a trip; it was a deeply spiritual pilgrimage to a place steeped in devotion and tradition. On the auspicious occasion of Guru Rinpoche's birth anniversary, our family joined countless others to immerse ourselves in a day of blessings, cultural richness, and profound reflection.

We began our day bright and early, around 8:30 AM, with packed lunches in hand – just in case our meal times didn't align with the institute's schedule. The day dawned beautifully, assuaging our fears of rain and promising clear skies for our excursion. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by monks who kindly offered us breakfast. Having already eaten a decent meal before setting out, we proceeded directly to the day's program.

Outside the main structure, dancers entertained the crowds who had come for blessings, their vibrant movements a testament to Bhutanese culture. Inside, His Eminence Trulku Thinley presided over prayers dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, his presence radiating peace. The institute teemed with local people seeking blessings, and attendees had the flexibility to move between the spiritual programs and the lively entertainment outside. Tea, snacks, and juices were generously served throughout the day, ensuring everyone was comfortable. The presence of the Honorable Dzongda of Paro and his team from the Dzongkhag administration further graced the event. Lunch was served sumptuously and in abundance, a true feast for all.

In the recess of the day's main program, the monks showcased their impressive debating skills – a fascinating glimpse into their rigorous spiritual training.

As the monks prepared the hall for the blessing program, we stepped outside and caught glimpses of the vibrant entertainment. It was truly a perfect break for the local people, offering a welcome respite from their tiring days of vegetable harvesting and cultivating. Even during our lunch break, the dancers continued to entertain us, adding to the day's charm. It was truly a wonderful experience to receive such profound blessings, be enthralled by the serene environment, and enjoy the continuous cultural performances.

In a matter of minutes, it was time to receive blessings from His Eminence Trulku Thinley Rinpoche. He bestowed upon us the powerful Tacha-chung-sum wang, a rare and auspicious empowerment. This blessing connects us with Tamdrin, the emanation of Chenrezig (Buddha of Compassion); Chagna Dorji (Vajrapani), embodying power for enlightenment; and Ja Chung (Garuda), a mystical protector removing obstacles in Vajrayana Buddhism. To receive such an empowerment on Guru Rinpoche's birthday from a high lama like Trulku Thinley Rinpoche, especially in a blessed place, was an exceptionally rare opportunity.

Even after conferring the blessings from his throne, His Eminence still made the effort to descend and personally touch our heads, a gesture that profoundly assured us of having received the blessings. It’s often said that many devotees aren't truly satisfied unless a great lama bestows the blessings directly upon their heads; this personal touch signifies genuine receipt.

The institute itself boasts a truly ambient setting. Classrooms and clean hostels for monks surround the main assembly hall. On the second floor of the main hall, a library offers a quiet retreat. Resting places for guests of all kinds were thoughtfully designed for comfort. From one side of the institute, we enjoyed breathtaking views of Damchu, Paga, Rinchenling, and Shemaganglkha in Chukha Dzongkhag.

Fully satisfied with our visit, we then departed for Dobji Dzong, the revered seat of the great yogi Milarepa.

In the evening, after our incredibly satisfying day, we all gathered at Lop Sonam's residence for some well-deserved relaxation. We unwound over hot teas, cakes, and snacks, reflecting on the day's profound blessings. Since lunch had been so generously served at Serlung, we ended up enjoying our packed lunches for dinner before heading home, perfectly content.

Our spiritual journey on the birth anniversary of Guru Rinpoche was truly a profound and unforgettable experience. From receiving the powerful blessings of His Eminence Trulku Thinley Rinpoche and the rare Tacha-chung-sum wang, to soaking in the serene ambiance of the Serlung Pelkar Choling Goenpa, every moment resonated deeply. The blend of spiritual devotion, vibrant cultural displays, and the precious opportunity to share this as a family made it an especially memorable day. It was a day filled with grace, reflection, and a deep sense of connection to our rich spiritual heritage.
